Regarding Scooter’s question , my basic philosophy towards filters is that you should only use them when you need to. And there are such times. For example, if you are shooting green leaves in the rain, the chances are that they won’t look green; they will look white due to the reflection of the overcast sky. In this case, you use a polarizer filter to cut the unwanted reflection and bring out the original true green colour. Or, if you are shooting daylight slide film in the shade, to get rid of a the exaggerated blue cast you will probably get in the final result, you may want to use a warming filter such as an 81A, which, again, brings out the original true colour. Otherwise, for my kind of photography, I don’t really see the need for filters. Same goes for digital alteration. Just as you might adjust colour or contrast in the darkroom to get the printing results that match what you saw with your own eyes, there are times when you have no choice but to alter digitally. But is it altering, or is it rendering what you originally saw with your eyes? For me, I like to capture what I see; for others, they like to get creative and express something more. Chacun son gout, eh?
